Son Palenque Samba

Son Palenque

Three new recordings from Colombia a delirious brew of highlife and chalupa, Afrobeat and champeta.

Presenting the legendary Afro-Colombian band from San Basilio de Palenque, a village established in 1706 by runaway slaves near Cartagena, and the Caribbean coast of Colombia (where West African dance music has carried the swing since Nigerian sailors started bringing records in the early 1970s).
Another version of the folk song Awa Na Re (from Tony Allen's Lagos No Shaking album), Samba is a homage to Nigerian musical heroes, in particular the great drummer himself. Sizzling horns arranged by all-time maestro Ramon Benitez.
El Lobo tells the story of a wolf lost in the Palenque bush; Aguata a tambora rhythm is about rain.
