Yoshi Wada
The Appointed Cloud

An absolutely captivating hour of intensely layered and shifting — periodically quietened — drones and loops, blurting, blaring and banging. The original 1987 performance — stunningly captured here — suspensefully evoked a succession of immense spaces which are dread and apocalyptic but continuously smeared with human interjections. (And the glowering moodiness which holds sway is lifted at the end by a long series of fanfares, then a racket of thronged pipes.)
Proceedings are dominated by a self-made 80-pipe organ and bagpipes, with sirens, a gong and various percussion, and a massive suspended metal sheet stoking the drama.
'The overall effect is of a collaboration in heaven between Oliver Messiaen and Albert Ayler, channelled by Lamonte Young' (The Wire).

We also have copies of the limited edition of one hundred: the standard CD version plus a numbered, full-scale reproduction (29 x 85 cm) of the original score, drawn by the composer, all sealed in a paper bag.

Madlib and Azymuth's Ivan Conti!

'Every time I produce something, it’s as if I’m still trying to prove myself. Every note, every song, every project, whether an arrangement or whatever, all of it is a unique challenge.'
Hats off.

Another Larry Levan favourite — classic soul, hurting and full of attitude — with a Kim Fowley on the flip.

From 1979 — mainly solo, reworking old themes and melodies, and updating his cover versions to include more contemporary guitarists, even proteges like Leo Kottke.

Brilliant techy hip hop mixes from the Glasgow contingent.

Willie Hutch, Daft Punk, Us3, Millie, Tommy James and co on the Bmore chopping block.

A spectacular array of forty-eight beauties on this killer shirt, expertly screen-printed.

Unusually moody and downbeat jazz stylings from this contemporary Portland, Oregon ensemble featuring members of Jackie-O Motherfucker and a Tzadik or two. Free CD.

Hard. Thrilling and blood-curdling both.

The fifth in this unmissable series showcases the traditional Rumanian music of the great Gypsy diva, from the 1960s and 70s. Refined and full of yearning.

The new, lighter Chateau Flight remixes carry Herbie on their shoulders (not Ra like the first time round).

Amazing, fierce, percussive house music from 1987.
